nothing was ever the same: what does it mean to be a sober addict in recovery…?

*for the purpose of this text, sober is used interchangeably with abstinence

what does it mean to be a sober addict in recovery when western culture suggests that everybody drinks, that it’s normal, that it’s okay? that western culture suggests that ‘normal’ drinking is done in a fun yet controlled way? that western culture suggests that drinking is good, smoking weed is socially acceptable, ‘popping molly’ is okay but only at a party and that using crack, meth and heroin are still considered inherently addictive and ‘the worst of the worst’?

what does it mean to be a sober addict in recovery when most evening events i hear about are at bars, involve drinking or serve alcohol? what does it mean to be a sober addict in recovery when i am the one to advocate for sober spaces as an access need for my friends but i still have a hard…
